What is an atomizer?
In the world of vaping, the term atomizer refers to any device or component where the e-liquid is vaporized. While the dictionary defines an atomizer as “a device for emitting water, perfume, or other liquids as a fine spray,” for vapers, the meaning is slightly different.

Modern atomizers share a similar design and operation. To use an atomizer, you’ll need a few basic tools, wire or a pre-made coil, and a wick (usually cotton). Follow these steps to build your atomizer:
- Prepare your coil and secure it on the atomizer’s build deck (repeat for atomizers requiring multiple coils)
- Check coil resistance on an ohm meter or a vape mod, keeping device limits and battery safety in mind
- Slowly dry burn your coil(s) to remove hot spots and ensure even glowing (skip for spaced coils)
- Allow the coil to cool down to room temperature
- Prepare your wick and place it inside your coil(s)
- Place the wick tails in the wicking channels
- Drip e-juice on the coil to prime your wick
- Allow the wick to saturate for a moment
To fire your atomizer, adjust the power based on your coil specifications. Rebuildable dripping atomizers (RDA) and rebuildable tank atomizers (RTA) require different methods for maintaining e-juice levels.
However, not all atomizers are built the same way and some are much easier to use than others. Some atomizers are designed for single coils, some for dual and some for triple or more. Some decks are easy to work with, while others might be more demanding.
Even wicking an atomizer might be more complicated than it sounds: wick channels might be too small or too large, wicks might need to be combed out to help with saturation and wick length may need to be carefully measured.
For these reasons, rebuildable atomizers are the most demanding vape tanks out there, but also the ones that can give the most tailor-made experience!
What is a Clearomizer?

Clearomizers are popular, widely used devices for vaping. The name comes from the combination of “clear” and “atomizer.”
Typically, clearomizers consist of a glass or plastic clear tank, a replaceable coil, a chimney connecting the coil to the top cap, and a mouthpiece. Aspire was one of the first companies to popularize clearomizers with their CE4 and CE5 models.
How does a clearomizer work?
Using a clearomizer is easy once you understand the basics. Prime your coil by dripping e-liquid onto it, assemble the tank, fill it with juice, and let it sit to saturate the wick. When using a variable wattage device, start at a low wattage and increase until you achieve your desired vape. Be cautious not to exceed the recommended wattage on the coil to avoid dry hits.
Clearomizers are not as easy to operate as cartomizers, but certainly easier than atomizers. Many people will start vaping on a clearomizer, as newer products will combine an excellent vape experience without the hassle of having to build your own coils. If you are using a carto and want to get a better vaping experience without having to mess with tools and wires, then clearomizers are the best way to go.

Cartomizers are vaping devices that attach to a battery and are commonly known as cigalikes or e-cigarettes. The name comes from the combination of “cartridge” and “atomizer.” Cartomizers and batteries usually resemble the size and shape of a cigarette, with the cartomizer serving as the filter. Most cartomizers are pre-filled and replaceable, with the wicking material typically being polyester fiberfill or polyfill.
How does a cartomizer work?
Cartomizers are the simplest devices to operate. Just screw the cartomizer onto the battery and press the button while inhaling. When vapor production decreases, it’s time to replace the cartomizer. Cartomizers may not provide the best flavor and vapor production, but they are convenient and easy to use, making them a suitable choice for many vapers, especially those new to vaping.
Choosing the Right Vape Tank for You
So, which one should you choose? If you want a balance between ease of use and performance, then a clearomizer may be your best bet. They offer a high-quality vape experience while allowing you to replace your coils quickly and easily. Yes, coils will cost you some money, but they are reasonably priced and you will generally replace them once every week or two anyway.
If you are after the best performance and are willing to learn how to build and wick, then an atomizer might be your kind of vape gear. Atomizers offer the best flavor out of all other types of vape tanks and are generally less expensive in the long run, as cotton and wire are usually very cheap to source. It may take some research and practice to perfect your build, but with time, you’ll likely be creating excellent coils in no time.
On the other hand, if all of this sounds too complicated, a cartomizer might be the best option for you. While you won’t get the best performance in terms of flavor and vapor production, cartomizers will satisfy your nicotine cravings and simulate the experience of smoking a cigarette. The ease of use of a cartomizer is unbeatable – just keep your battery charged and always have extra cartos on hand.
Remember, the best vape is the one that works for you. Some people quit smoking with quad coil RDAs, while others stay loyal to their cigalikes for years. The most important thing is to do what feels right for you and to stay smoke-free. That’s what matters most!
